🧭 The hut at a glance
The Mönchsjochhütte stands at 3,650 m on the east ridge of the Mönch, right at the source of the Great Aletsch Glacier and in the middle of the Jungfrau-Aletsch UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is the highest staffed mountain hut in Switzerland and quite literally clings to the rock on stilts. It is owned by the Mönchsjochhütte cooperative, made up mainly of Grindelwald mountain guides. The building was extended and modernised in 2004.
🛏️ Beds
- 120 beds in multi-bed rooms (10–12 places per room), mattress dormitories
- All beds are equipped with Nordic duvets
- A light cotton or silk sleeping bag liner is compulsory
- Staffed from March to October
- Outside the season: an unheated emergency room with 8–16 beds and no cooking facilities
- Booking compulsory
🍽️ Services
- Three-course dinner at 6.30 p.m.
- Generous breakfast buffet with local produce
- Restaurant serving hot and cold food, day visitors welcome
- Drinking water in PET bottles (no running water for washing)
- Power from a diesel generator and a solar installation; cooking is done with wood
